Overview
The Certificate in American Sign Language is offered by UVic's School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures together with the Division of Continuing Studies. It takes learners to a conversational level of communicative competence in ASL while building knowledge and appreciation of Deaf culture and community. The credential totals 10.5 units, of which six are ASL language courses taught by recognised members of the Deaf community; the balance comes from advanced language classes and coursework in second language acquisition, linguistics or cross-cultural communication. Because ASL relies on a visual modality, the program also broadens students' sense of what a language can be, sharpening intercultural sensitivity. Classes are held face to face and the certificate typically takes one to two years, often alongside an undergraduate degree.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The American Sign Language Certificate is restricted to current UVic undergraduate students: it is declared through DeclareMe, the university's program-declaration system, rather than through a separate application with its own GPA or English-language test requirement. The program page states no minimum grade, prior course, or standardized test score as a condition of declaring the certificate. Applicants who have already completed college- or university-level ASL coursework, or who are fluent signers, may petition the department to begin at a higher language level than the certificate's normal starting point.
