Overview
UVic's PhD in History trains historians to master their craft alongside the Department of History's faculty in the Faculty of Humanities. Coursework is divided along geographical and topical or thematic lines; once courses and comprehensive examinations are complete, candidates move into original research in their chosen dissertation field. Students may also take part in the interdisciplinary Cultural, Social and Political Thought program. Stated outcomes include mastering multiple topical and geographical fields, working with both published and unpublished records, making an original contribution to understanding of the past, developing communication skills for academic and non-academic audiences, and acquiring teaching experience as a teaching assistant. Expected length is about five years, with full-time and part-time study options on campus.

Admission Requirements: Admission to the History PhD is assessed from the application file rather than a fixed grade cut-off: applicants submit a statement of intent outlining their research interests and goals, two letters of reference, and a writing sample demonstrating academic capability, as the program's own admission page sets out. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet a department threshold above the university-wide minimum: IELTS Academic with an Overall Band Score of at least 7.0 and no individual component below 6.5, or TOEFL with a minimum of 610 on the paper-based test or 101 on the internet-based test. The program page states no minimum grade-point average of its own, so the Faculty of Graduate Studies' general admission requirements (normally a master's degree standing in the low-to-mid B range or better) apply by default. September-entry applications are due January 15 to be considered for funding.
