Program details

Overview

This MSc combines coursework with supervised research across computer science areas such as large-scale graph algorithms and social network analysis, human-computer interaction and extended reality, software engineering, machine learning, computer graphics, networking, medical imaging and computational biology. It typically suits applicants with an undergraduate background in computer science, engineering or mathematics with a computer science emphasis, who submit two reference reports, a résumé, a statement of research interests and transcripts. The degree is completed full-time and on-campus over two years through a thesis or project, with an optional co-op stream and three intake dates across the year. The three intakes carry deadlines of June 15 for January, October 15 for May, and December 15 for September entry, and GRE scores, while optional, are recommended for international applicants.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission follows UVic's general Master's requirements: a four-year bachelor's degree (or equivalent) with a minimum “B” average over the last two years, plus program-specific criteria. Most successful applicants to the Department of Computer Science hold an undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, or mathematics with an emphasis on computer science, though the page states no minimum grade average of its own. Applicants do not need a supervisor to apply, though potential supervisors should be named in the application. GRE scores are optional but highly recommended for international applicants. The application package includes two assessment reports from academic or professional references, a current résumé, post-secondary transcripts, and a letter of intent covering career goals and research interests. English-language proficiency follows UVic's general graduate standard for applicants whose first language is not English (IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90, no section below 20, among other accepted tests).

Application Details

Start Date: September, January and May
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, which opens for 2027-entry applications on 1 October 2026: most degree programmes see September 2027 entry close 31 January 2027, January 2027 entry close 30 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry close 31 March 2027, though Teacher Education post-degree programmes close 2 January 2027, Indigenous Education post-degree admits on an ongoing basis, and Engineering's Summer entry (high-school graduates only) closes 31 December 2026. International applicants use the same portal and face identical dates, since UVic publishes no separate international deadline. UVic treats these as fixed annual dates rather than rolling admission, though it warns any programme can close early without notice. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
