Program details

Overview

UBC Okanagan's Computer Science MSc runs over two years and offers a choice between a thesis track, pairing coursework with a supervised research thesis, and a project track that trades some of that research depth for extra coursework and a shorter applied project. Research strengths cluster around three areas: general computer science topics like algorithms, human-computer interaction and databases, applied data science, and mathematical optimization, including convex analysis and nonlinear programming. Both tracks require forming a supervisory committee early in the program, and thesis students defend a research proposal before writing up their results. Entry typically calls for an upper-level academic average in the mid-70s or higher, though the department will also consider applicants with strong relevant professional experience.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 76.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Applicants must meet one of: a four-year BSc-equivalent in computer science or a related field with a minimum average of B+ (76%) or better in third- or fourth-year classes; at least 12 credits of third/fourth-year coursework in the intended field at an A grade (80%) or better; or significant formal training and relevant professional experience judged sufficient for advanced work in the field. The College of Graduate Studies sets the specific English-language proficiency thresholds, which this page does not itemise; UBC Okanagan's general figures are IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90 overall (minimum 22 Reading/Listening, 21 Writing/Speaking). Application materials are an online application and fee, unofficial transcripts (official ones required upon admission), a CV, and three reference forms or letters. Two intakes run each year: September (deadline 10 January) and January (deadline 1 June).

Application Details

Start Date: September and January
Application Deadline: Domestic and international undergraduate applicants both apply through EducationPlannerBC for Winter Session 2027/28 (September 2027 entry) and Summer 2027: applications open in early October 2026 and the equal-consideration deadline is 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, the same date for both groups; a few programs keep reviewing late applications on a space-available basis afterwards. Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
