UVic's Master of Engineering in Telecommunications and Information Security (MTIS) is a one-year, course-based degree that trains engineers for specialist roles in network, database and security operations. Coursework pairs telecommunications fundamentals with applied information security: students model network traffic, work with data mining techniques, practise ethical hacking, and learn to draft the corporate security policies and procedures that protect IT infrastructure. Delivery is on-campus and full-time, there is no thesis or major project requirement, and an optional co-op term can be added. Graduates are prepared to investigate and resolve cybersecurity incidents, troubleshoot telecommunications systems, and explain technical security decisions to non-specialist stakeholders.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The Telecommunications and Information Security MEng draws most of its students from an undergraduate background in electrical or computer engineering, computer science, or a related discipline, though the program page does not set this out as a hard prerequisite. The application requires two assessment reports from academic or professional references, a current resume, a statement of intent of up to two pages, and post-secondary transcripts; applicants are not required to secure a supervisor before applying. The program is self-funded, so admitted students must arrange their own funding before starting. The page states no minimum grade-point average or English-language test scores of its own, so the Faculty of Graduate Studies' general admission requirements and university-wide language-proficiency minimums apply by default.
Application Details
Start Date:September and January
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, which opens for 2027-entry applications on 1 October 2026: most degree programmes see September 2027 entry close 31 January 2027, January 2027 entry close 30 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry close 31 March 2027, though Teacher Education post-degree programmes close 2 January 2027, Indigenous Education post-degree admits on an ongoing basis, and Engineering's Summer entry (high-school graduates only) closes 31 December 2026. International applicants use the same portal and face identical dates, since UVic publishes no separate international deadline. UVic treats these as fixed annual dates rather than rolling admission, though it warns any programme can close early without notice. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
