Overview
Human Rights and Law is a double-degree program at the University of Waterloo delivered jointly with the University of Essex in the United Kingdom. Students spend the first three or four years at Waterloo completing an Honours Bachelor of Arts with a minor in Human Rights, choosing a major from 28 arts disciplines, before transferring to Essex for two years to complete a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in Human Rights Law. Coursework at Waterloo includes Canadian constitutional law, discrimination, and international human rights institutions, introduced from first year and continuing throughout the degree. Graduates receive two credentials: a Bachelor of Arts, including a minor in Human Rights, from Waterloo, and a Bachelor of Laws in Human Rights Law from Essex. The combined program can be completed in as little as five years. Progression to Essex requires completing the required Waterloo coursework and meeting Essex's own English-language entry requirements.
