Overview

Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo leads to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), a doctoral-level research degree in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering. The program combines advanced coursework with original research, preparing students to become problem-solvers and innovators in mechanical systems and electro-mechanical design. Students work within one of five research areas: automation and controls, fluid mechanics, materials engineering and processing, solid-body mechanics and mechanical design, and thermal engineering. Admission normally requires a thesis-based master's degree from a university of recognized standing with a minimum 80% standing and demonstrated research capabilities; applicants without a thesis-based master's must satisfy the department of their ability to conduct independent research. The program is delivered on campus and runs full-time over 48 months, with admission available for the Fall, Winter, and Spring terms. Graduates are prepared for research careers in academia, government, and industry.

Admission Requirements: Admission normally requires a thesis-based master's degree from a university of recognized standing with a minimum 80% standing and demonstrated research capabilities; applicants without a thesis-based master's must satisfy the department of their ability to conduct independent research. Applicants whose primary language of instruction was not English must meet Waterloo's English language proficiency requirement (TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall, with 4.5 in writing and 4 in speaking, reading and listening, or IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, with 6.0 in writing and speaking).
