Mechanical Engineering (PhD)

This PhD, offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, is a research-intensive program developing skills in independent thinking, research methodology, and data analysis. Research areas include aerodynamics and fluid mechanics, biomechanics, combustion and energy systems, design and manufacturing, dynamics and control, materials and structures, vibrations and acoustics, fluid-structure interaction, computational fluid dynamics, and advanced materials and nanotechnology. Students typically work with a co-supervisor alongside their principal supervisor given the interdisciplinary nature of the research, and have access to research facilities including a major wind tunnel and extensive computational resources. Faculty collaborate through research centres such as the Centre for Intelligent Machines, the McGill Institute for Advanced Materials, and the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital. The department ranks among the top three in Canada. Admission requires an eligible bachelor's degree and proof of English-language proficiency. Fall and Winter intakes are offered, with respective December 1 and July 15 application deadlines.
