Overview

The Master of Mathematics for Teachers (MMT) at the University of Waterloo is a part-time, fully online professional graduate program in the Faculty of Mathematics, designed for practising secondary mathematics teachers. It deepens understanding of the core foundations of mathematics rather than teaching pedagogy, strengthening participants' mathematical knowledge for classroom instruction. Courses are delivered asynchronously, allowing students to study online at their own pace from anywhere while continuing to teach. The program runs over 36 months and admits students for the Fall term. Applicants require at least one year of prior work experience in education alongside their academic background. As a professional, non-thesis degree, it focuses on applied mathematical content knowledge relevant to secondary-level teaching rather than original research. Graduates strengthen their subject-matter expertise and are prepared to bring a deeper, more rigorous understanding of mathematics into their teaching practice.
