Overview

This VCC certificate develops the creative and technical skills the apparel industry expects, running one to two years with a September start. Students work through pattern drafting, draping, professional hand and machine sewing, garment construction, knit garments, lined dresses, office attire, fitting for niche body types, fabric properties, testing and sourcing, textile print and dye techniques, manufacturing specifications and precision drawing, alongside technical illustration in Illustrator and Photoshop, fashion history and culture, industry issues and trends, textile industry ethics, branding, marketing and professional communication. Delivery mixes lectures, seminars and videos with practical labs and demonstrations, team activities, computer work, field trips, student presentations, research assignments and individual and group projects, and includes a 120-hour industry practicum. Admission is competitively selected on Grade 12 graduation, English 12, a letter of intent, two references, an interview, and a portfolio of two original artworks, at least 20 fashion-related drawings and two sewn items.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission requires Grade 12 graduation, or equivalent, and English Studies 12 with a 'C' grade, or equivalent. Selection is competitive: applicants submit a letter of intent of 500 words or fewer, two letters of reference, and a portfolio comprising two pieces of original artwork, a sketchbook with a minimum of 20 fashion-related drawings, and two sewn items, then attend an interview with the programme's selection committee. VCC notes that applicants without an extensive portfolio or sewing background may still be considered if they can demonstrate an interest in fashion through hobby, education, portfolio or work experience; these candidates still submit the full documentation and interview, and may be asked to complete prerequisite sewing and/or drawing courses before starting the programme. No standardized English-language test score such as IELTS or TOEFL is stated.

Application Details

Start Date: September
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) apply through EducationPlannerBC. VCC publishes each programme's own application window, term by term, on its When to Apply page rather than one college-wide date: windows open roughly six to twenty months before the term starts and close on a stated date, though popular programmes can close earlier once seats fill, since places generally go to eligible applicants in the order their application is completed. International applicants use the International Applicant option on EducationPlannerBC; VCC opens international applications on 1 February of the previous year for Winter entry, 1 June for Spring/Summer, and 1 October for Fall, with no fixed closing date — applications continue until roughly three to four months before the term begins or until it fills, so admission is effectively rolling for international applicants. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
