Overview
This VCC Continuing Studies diploma prepares students across the fashion conception, design, production and sales cycle over six sequential terms, stated to run two to three years. Coursework spans fashion cycles, pattern drafting and grading, sewing techniques, illustration including technical fashion illustration, draping, fashion history, fabric and textile studies, textile surface design, computer-aided drafting, business planning, fashion marketing, and website design and e-commerce. The program includes a 120-hour industry practicum, and its final term, Work Experience for Fashion, carries 4.5 academic units; attendance is mandatory throughout. Instruction combines practical labs, team activities, computer work, field trips, lectures, seminars, presentations and portfolio development. Admission is by competitive entry: applicants need Grade 12 graduation or equivalent with a C grade in English 12 or equivalent, a Letter of Intent of up to 500 words, two letters of reference, a portfolio of artwork, sketchbook work and sewn items, and an interview with the program's selection committee; VCC notes prior sewing experience is not required, though demonstrated interest is considered favourably. Admission Requirements: Admission to this diploma requires Grade 12 graduation, or equivalent, and English Studies 12 with a 'C' grade, or equivalent. Selection is competitive: applicants submit a letter of intent of 500 words or fewer, two letters of reference, and a portfolio comprising two pieces of original artwork, a sketchbook with a minimum of 20 fashion-related drawings, and two sewn items, then attend an interview with the programme's selection committee. VCC notes that applicants without an extensive portfolio or sewing background may still be considered if they can demonstrate an interest in fashion through hobby, education, portfolio or work experience; these candidates still submit the full documentation and interview, and may be asked to complete sewing and/or drawing courses before starting the diploma. No standardized English-language test score such as IELTS or TOEFL is stated.
