Program details

Overview

The diploma allows students to audition into and specialise within a chosen genre, spanning classical, jazz, contemporary and electronic music, studying under working performers, composers and producers. Coursework covers rehearsal methods, improvisation and notation systems.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Academic entry is Grade 12 graduation, a GED or an equivalent, with English 12 or Communications 12 at a pass or an equivalent; applicants who have not graduated from secondary school can still be considered with the permission of the Music department leader. English language proficiency must be at an English 12 level or equivalent, and any English assessment other than an English 12 taken in Canada must have been written in the previous calendar year. On the music side you must pass an audition in your major performance area — the requirements differ by instrument and are published separately — and submit the supplemental application form. Entrance auditions and musicianship examinations run from February through May, and applicants sit a diagnostic examination in theory plus tests of aural perception and rhythm; the standard is equivalent to VCC's preparatory theory and musicianship courses (MUSC 1013, MUSC 1033, MUSC 1011 and MUSC 1031), and candidates accepted at audition who need upgrading may take those alongside the diploma. Applications with transcripts and supporting documents are accepted between 1 November and 1 April; later ones are considered only if space remains. VCC states this programme is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents and directs international students to VCC International, which lists separately the programmes open to them.

Application Details

Start Date: September intake only. VCC's academic year runs in three terms: Winter (January to April), Spring/Summer (May to August) and Fall (September to December).
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) apply through EducationPlannerBC. VCC publishes this programme's windows term by term on its When to Apply page: Fall 2027 entry (September start) — open 1 October 2026, close 1 June 2027. Seats go to eligible applicants in the order their applications are completed, so the programme can close before the listed end date once it fills. The Music department works to its own calendar as well: applications with transcripts and supporting documents are taken between 1 November and 1 April, later ones are considered only if space remains, and entrance auditions and musicianship exams run from February through May. VCC's page for this programme states it is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, and points international students to VCC International, which lists separately the programmes and intakes open to them; there the application periods open on 1 February, 1 June and 1 October of the previous year for the Winter, Spring/Summer and Fall terms, with no fixed closing date — a programme accepts applications until roughly three to four months before classes begin, or until its seats are gone.
