Practical Nursing Diploma

Admission Requirements: Options A and B — VIU's general admission requirements, plus a minimum "C+" in English 12 or equivalent, a minimum "C" in Pre-Calculus 11 or Foundations of Mathematics 11 or equivalent, a minimum "C" in Anatomy and Physiology 12 or equivalent, and a minimum "C+" in HHPN 100 (Human Anatomy and Physiology for Practical Nurses). You may be offered conditional acceptance before HHPN 100 is finished, but it must be complete before you start any Practical Nursing course. Option B additionally requires 600 hours of work in the past two years as a Health Care Assistant, Resident Care Attendant or Home Support / Residential Care Aide, confirmed on VIU's PN Confirmation of Work Hours form signed by your supervisor or HR department. Recommended but not required: a recent writing-skills course and volunteer experience in a health care setting. Enrolment is limited and applicants who meet the minimums are ranked by GPA, so meeting them does not guarantee a seat. Indigenous applicants may apply for reserved seats through the Access Initiative for Indigenous Students form. Required for the first day of classes: a completed Immunization Requirements Form, proof of WHMIS training, and a CPR level "C" certificate. Practicum and fieldwork placements require a satisfactory criminal record check, requested through VIU and processed by the Ministry under the Criminal Records Review Act; an RCMP check does not satisfy the Act. VIU states this programme is not currently open to international students. Applicants with English as an additional language must, before licensure, meet the language standard set by BCCNM: IELTS Academic with an overall 7.5 and section scores of 7.5 speaking, 8 listening, 7 reading and 7.5 writing, or CELBAN with 8 speaking, 10 listening, 8 reading and 7 writing.
