Dental Hygiene Diploma

Admission Requirements: Entry is on a post-secondary prerequisite basis, not straight from secondary school. VIU's general admission requirements apply, and you must have completed the prerequisite list (or approved equivalents): 6 credits of the Degree English Requirement; 8 credits of anatomy and physiology (BIOL 156A/156L with BIOL 157A/157L, or BIOL 156 with BIOL 157, or BIOL 151/152 with BIOL 153/154); 8 credits of chemistry (CHEM 140A/140L paired with CHEM 141A/142L or CHEM 142A/142L, or CHEM 140 with CHEM 141 or CHEM 142); 6 credits of psychology (PSYC 111 and 112, or 121 and 122, or 131 and 132); 3 credits of statistics (MATH 211 or MATH 161); and a 3-credit elective at the 100 or 200 level. Laboratory as well as theory components are required, and courses taken elsewhere may be approved as equivalents even at a lower credit value. You must also complete the CASPer test. Admission is competitive and decided on a combination of GPA and CASPer score. VIU advises registering for CASPer with your VIU student number; a score is valid for one admission cycle. Indigenous applicants may apply for reserved seats through the Access Initiative for Indigenous Students form. Once accepted, by early August you must submit a completed Immunization Requirements Form signed by a public health nurse, evidence of a nationally recognised WHMIS course, and evidence of current CPR Basic Life Support certification that included hands-on training. If you plan to ladder into a Bachelor of Dental Science (Dental Hygiene) afterwards, VIU advises checking prerequisite transferability with the receiving institution.
