Overview
The Master of Applied Politics (MAP) is a one-year graduate program grounded in political science that emphasizes practical, real-world skills over purely theoretical study. Students complete placements with community organizations, local elected officials, or government agencies, alongside coursework in policy analysis, electoral and media analysis, and survey design applied to domestic and international problems. The program can be completed in eight or twelve months of full-time study, or pursued part-time. Admission requires a four-year honours undergraduate degree, or equivalent, in political science or a related field, with a minimum B average over the final two years of study; applicants from other disciplines need at least two political science courses, including one with a social science theory component. The graduate program committee also reviews a statement of interests, a writing sample, and letters of reference. Classes are delivered in person on the Waterloo campus, with a single Fall intake.
