Diploma in Kennslufræði

Kennslufræði is a one-year diploma programme in art education at the Iceland University of the Arts, run by the Department of Art Education and carrying 60 ECTS. It is taught in Icelandic and trains artists to teach, while building the skills and theoretical grounding they need to pass on their knowledge in different settings. Students gain an understanding of the teacher's work, both in theory and in the field. They learn to plan courses and study units from the current curricula and to choose teaching materials, teaching methods and assessment methods that suit the task. Teaching and communication are also considered in a wider setting, and students are encouraged to set out their own views on arts education and on what the community offers in it. The department brings together people from many disciplines who work on developing methods of arts teaching with broad social and ideological reference points.
