The MA in Design and New Environments (MADNE) is a two-year, full-time master's programme of 120 ECTS at the Iceland University of the Arts, taught in English by the Department of Design. It asks how design can respond to shifts in the environment, technology, culture and society, using research, prototyping and communication to develop new solutions.
The course mixes studio work with residencies, seminars organised around themes and practical design experiments, all within a small cohort. The first year begins with case studies, field research and studio design projects, and includes a residency lasting six weeks in spring in a professional setting. In the second year students carry out independent projects and complete a practice-led master's project.
Graduates are prepared for careers linking design, sustainability and innovation, including design consultancy and independent practice, or for further research and PhD studies. From fall 2026, tuition fees apply to applicants from outside the EEA, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Switzerland.
