The Master of Architecture at the Iceland University of the Arts is a two-year, full-time programme of 120 ECTS run by the Department of Architecture and taught in English. It treats architecture as a discipline that studies and shapes how people relate to their surroundings, and it aims to build critical thinking, awareness, self-reflection, imagination and the ability to act on ideas.
The design studio forms the core of the course. Students complete four studio projects, each led by a local or international practitioner, alongside supporting courses, and they work both on their own and in teams. Studios in the middle of the programme often include international collaboration. The final studio is an independent thesis project that leads to the M.Arch title.
Iceland serves as the setting for design exploration and for a community of teachers and students who research architecture together. Graduates can work as building or urban designers in private firms and the public sector, in other creative fields, or continue to doctoral study.
