Overview
This subfield trains artists and designers to independently create functional glass objects, environmental installations and architectural elements, building an understanding of glass as a material alongside broader creative and research skills. Coursework covers composition in both flat and spatial work through techniques including glass painting, screen printing, mosaic and stained glass, as well as designing and prototyping functional glass objects, sculptures and architectural elements.
Students learn core glassmaking processes such as mould melting, glassblowing, fusing, pate de verre and mould casting, together with finishing techniques like engraving, grinding, polishing and matting, alongside interior-design software and continued training in drawing, painting and sculpture. A summer study period focuses on managing glass art exhibitions and restoring stained glass, and later study deepens each student's individual artistic practice through close collaboration with experienced artists and teachers. Students take part in exchanges with partner art academies across Europe and can access an equipped workshop and connections with glass producers in Latvia and abroad.
