The Department of Painting at the Art Academy of Latvia offers a two-year, full-time master's route that leads to the degree Master of Humanities in Visual Plastic Arts. The same department also teaches a four-year bachelor's route. Artists choose their own direction of development, starting from an interest in painting.
Early courses build skills and technique, composition work, imagination, visual language and personal style. Every year includes compulsory painting subjects, while a technology section lets students sample techniques taught elsewhere in the academy, such as printmaking, sculpture, photography, animation and illustration.
Composition studies combine theoretical lectures, exhibition visits and workshops with practical classes where students pick both the technique and the tutor. Each semester students plan their own timetable from the lectures and classes on offer, and they practise reasoning and speaking about art, building critical thinking and a culture of discussion.
