MA/MS in Composition

This master's programme trains composers in either academic composition or digital-technology (electronic music) composition, building knowledge of composition theory and practice, the basics of artistic research, and strong instrumentation, electronic and computer-music creation skills. Learning outcomes include knowing the styles, genres and techniques of music creation and basing original work on this knowledge, understanding the composer's role and its links to music theory and interpretation traditions, comparing and critically evaluating complex musical structures and compositional principles, and conducting artistic research tied to the final master's project and presenting it in a written research paper. Students also learn to create complex, professionally realised compositions, initiate creative projects while explaining their relevance to culture and art, lead teams of creators and promoters in line with professional ethics, and present work clearly to specialists and general audiences. The programme offers a choice between an Academic Composition or Digital Technologies specialisation, and graduates are described as prepared to work in cultural, music-education and concert institutions, in the music industry, or on art projects requiring compositional skill.
