The Certificate in Special Education is aimed at educators already working in Special Educational Needs schools, giving them a formal grounding in the field alongside how national and international policy and legislation around special education have developed over time. Rather than introducing teaching from scratch, it builds on experience staff already have in the classroom.
Delivered part-time over two years, the certificate totals 40 credits, made up of ten taught modules worth 24 credits and a 16-credit practicum in which educators apply what they have learned under the guidance of a tutor back in their own school setting. Coursework spans curriculum development, instructional planning, identifying individual learners' needs, assessment, psycho-pedagogy, social and life skills, and approaches to rehabilitation for learners with disabilities.
Because the practicum is supervised directly in participants' workplaces, the certificate is structured to translate theory into day-to-day practice rather than remaining a purely academic qualification.
