Financial engineering draws together mathematical finance, statistics and computing. This honours degree trains students to design and value financial products and to judge financial risk using mathematics, so that they can support decisions on hedging, investing and managing portfolios.
The programme tries to bridge advanced financial mathematics and day-to-day practice, and it introduces broader ideas from quantitative and computational finance. Students learn to use computational methods on a variety of financial problems. Study runs from calculus, statistics and accounting in level 1 to derivative valuation, credit risk and portfolio management in level 3, with a work placement during a semester break and a final project.
Typical employers are banks, investment houses, insurers and energy companies. The degree takes three years full-time or four and a half years part-time.
