BA/BS in Applied Linguistics

Language plays a role in virtually everything that we do. To understand how that works, we need to study language from different perspectives: How are languages structured and in which aspects are they similar and where do they differ? How do we learn language - as a child but also as adults? Why do we communicate differently in one situation or the other? And what does it mean to live in a multilingual society or in a world where generative AI increasingly participates in our conversations?

If you choose the Applied Linguistics specialisation of the Bachelor’s programme in Communication and Information Studies, you will dive into all these questions. All courses in this programme are in English.

You will study topics such as the structures of languages and how to analyse processes of language acquisition and language use. This applies to the individual level (why do not all children acquire their language effortlessly?) and to the societal level (what is the role of language in cultural interconnection in a multilingual society?) as well as to area of technology (how do Large Language Models work and how reliable is their output?).
