How the seas are used keeps changing, whether for food, mineral extraction, transport, wind energy, or tourism, and warming waters, overfishing, pollution, and rising sea levels are leaving deep marks on ecological processes and on the communities that live by and from the sea. This English-taught bachelor's teaches students to understand marine systems, studying the sea from an ecological angle while also looking at why the ocean matters for both food and society, taking in, for example, why ocean pollution happens and what follows from it, along with the opportunities that exist for a sustainable food supply. No other science bachelor's programme in the Netherlands covers this field, and because the degree approaches the sea from the angles of nature, food, and society together, students gain enough experience early on to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary way on the innovative, sustainable solutions this field still needs.
