Delivered by the Centre for Sami Studies, the two-year full-time programme is multidisciplinary across the social sciences and humanities, grounded in UiT's research on the Sami and other Indigenous peoples. Its thematic focus is the historical and contemporary experiences of Indigenous peoples worldwide, alongside how the international Indigenous movement has developed. Students take five thematic courses covering key issues in Indigenous studies plus one elective, together meant to give a wide grounding that students then draw on to select a thesis topic, with supervision drawn from the Sami Centre and other units and data collection for the thesis customarily carried out at the end of the second semester.
