HBKU's College of Islamic Studies designed the Graduate Certificate in Islamic Finance for people from any academic or professional background who want deeper knowledge of Islamic finance principles and practice, including skills for working in a market the university describes as worth more than USD 2 trillion globally. The certificate can also act as a bridge toward the College's master's degree in Islamic finance.
The one-year, 18-credit programme is taught in English and combines three core courses — covering contracts used in Islamic finance, how Islamic banks and financial markets operate, and corporate finance and financial engineering within an Islamic framework — with a choice of three electives from eleven options, ranging from analysis of financial statements at Islamic banks to sustainable finance and impact investing. The aim is to build both employability and a clearer understanding of how Islamic and conventional finance differ.
