The International Relations doctorate lets candidates explore global politics through their own research interests or through a supervised project. A pair of supervisors guides each researcher, and the team has particular depth in political theory, security, military studies, development and human rights. The subject also connects with criminology, which gives candidates a broad base for specialised work.
The research environment draws on the University of Cambridge library, the campus library and local archives. Links to research networks across the university and the wider community create opportunities for discussion and collaboration. Candidates are encouraged to test ideas against current debates in international politics.
Graduates are prepared for academic posts, policy analysis and advisory work in governmental and non-governmental settings. The PhD can be reached directly or through a preparatory MPhil stage, depending on the candidate's background and proposal.
