Overview
Two disciplines are brought together here: the sociological study of offending and the legal rules that govern it. Students ask why people break the law, how crime affects communities and how courts and statutes deal with it. A preparatory first year introduces core legal ideas and the habits needed for degree work.
Legal and criminological approaches are applied to current problems, with attention to recent changes in the justice system and newer threats such as online offending and calls for reform. Teaching includes a simulated courtroom where learners play lawyers and other roles, and analysis and evaluation are practised in every stage.
The course points toward practical posts within criminal justice, whether in this country or elsewhere, and prepares graduates to work in that field.
