The University of Warwick is a public research university in Coventry, England, established by Royal Charter in 1965 after receiving government approval for its founding in 1961.
The campus was developed jointly by Coventry City Council and Warwickshire County Council on land straddling the boundary between the city and the county. Warwick's first vice-chancellor was Jack Butterworth, who oversaw construction of the original campus buildings.
Teaching and research are organised into three faculties, Arts, Science Engineering and Medicine, and Social Sciences, spanning around 40 academic departments including Warwick Business School, Warwick Medical School and Warwick Manufacturing Group. The university reports more than 28,500 students, including over 10,600 from outside the UK and students from around 145 nationalities.
It belongs to the Russell Group of UK research-intensive universities, and in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, 92% of its submitted research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent.
The main campus lies roughly 25 minutes by train from Birmingham and about an hour from London.
