Chemistry (MPhil)

Run by the Department of Chemistry, this is a full-time research master's in which each student is placed in a group led by a member of academic staff. The period spent in the group is meant to develop research technique and specialist understanding. Groups cover a spread of topics. One example is biological chemistry, which looks at the ways large biological molecules interact with one another and with smaller compounds. Because the course introduces research practice and does not follow a set taught curriculum, what a student does over the year depends on the group they join. They gain laboratory and analytical experience while working inside a research culture shared across the whole Department. The experience serves as a sound basis for anyone planning to continue to doctoral research in chemistry.
