Industrial Design at Auburn leads to the professional Bachelor of Industrial Design degree, and the curriculum is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The course of study runs nine semesters, or four and a half years.
Students learn design principles alongside engineering, human factors, marketing and sociology. Technical skills include computer-aided design and drafting, prototype fabrication, photography, sketching and graphics. They are also introduced to design methods, color theory, product planning, visual communication, materials, manufacturing methods and consumer psychology.
A first-year studio is offered in the summer to students in good standing who have finished 24 credit hours or have School Head approval. Entry to the professional program in the fall afterward is selective and limited. Graduates can pursue industrial design and user experience roles in corporate and consulting offices.
