BA/BS in Special Education and Teaching

This bachelor's degree trains future teachers to work with kindergarten through twelfth grade students who have disabilities. The courses address most categories of disability but not sensory impairments or certain severe disabilities. Graduates learn research-supported methods for inclusive general education classrooms and how to design programs that fit each learner's needs in schools and community settings. The program satisfies Alabama's Level B teaching certification criteria for all grades from kindergarten to twelfth. Candidates have to meet the university's GPA requirement for graduation as well as the state education department's GPA rules. Admission to teacher education is a prerequisite for the clinical coursework, and the application for the internship must be filed a year ahead. The plan of study begins with English composition and core arts and literature courses.
