MA/MS in Sociology

Boston University's sociology master's degree gives graduate-level preparation to people headed for doctoral work and to those who want careers analyzing social issues for public agencies, research units or community organizations. Coursework is split between a required core and electives chosen by the student. The core covers sociological theory, both older and recent, along with research design and statistical analysis. A master's thesis is also required, and it should add something new to what sociologists already know. Admission calls for a bachelor's degree. Sociology is the preferred undergraduate field, but graduates of other disciplines can apply. Students are expected to master the field and to conduct their scholarship with integrity and professionalism. The degree can serve as a final credential or as a step toward a doctorate.
