PhD in Materials Engineering

Boston University's materials science and engineering division awards doctorates to students who start with either a bachelor's or a master's degree, and research can be pursued in topics where its faculty are active. Entrants with a bachelor's must finish everything required for the division's master's degree, including core and concentration courses, and then complete further units that mix open electives with research and dissertation credit. They are awarded the master's after meeting its requirements and passing the prospectus exam. Students arriving with a master's face no structured coursework, though they still need a set number of graduate-level units. The division recommends that they take core courses to help them pass the qualifying exam. Unstructured units may include engineering, science or management material.
