Overview

Boston University's product design and manufacture master's trains engineers to develop appealing products and the processes to build them. Leadership skills are also part of the program so graduates can turn creative concepts into designs that can be mass produced economically while staying sturdy and high in quality. Students may choose a thesis route or a practicum route. Intended outcomes include understanding current manufacturing engineering issues, how design relates to ease of manufacture, and the tactics and strategy of manufacturing, together with analytical, communication, technical and teamwork abilities. Graduates also learn to consider manufacturing and supply chain needs from the start of a project, anticipate technical and social trends, produce safe, dependable and affordable products, and think about the responsibilities that product designers bear toward society. A minimum average is required to graduate.
