This doctorate develops scholars who will work in research, university teaching and public-interest service. Courses prepare students to produce strong research in a chosen specialty while engaging current debates about religion.
Students work with religion faculty and with colleagues elsewhere in the university. Entrants will normally have studied religion or a related field as undergraduates, or will show advanced work in one tradition and introductory work in several others.
At least sixteen four-unit courses are needed, among them two on approaches to religious studies taken during the first three terms.
Doctoral students work closely with faculty advisors throughout, moving from structured coursework toward independent scholarship and a final dissertation. Prospective applicants should consult the program page and the relevant school admissions pages for current requirements, deadlines and tuition, since those details are not given on the program page.
