Anyone drawn to the technical side of buildings may find this applied degree a good fit. It focuses on the skills used to turn a design into a structure that meets code, and it is taught on the Chester Campus. Over the program, students use computer-aided design software to draft plans for a house and for a commercial building. They also carry out simple topographic surveys, test soil, concrete, and steel samples, review a building to judge whether it complies with regulations, and learn to handle surveying instruments. Some pathways lead onward to a four-year degree at Old Dominion University. People who finish may look for jobs such as surveying drafter, design assistant, or field inspector.
