Program details

Overview

This major draws on biology, physics and health science to explain what happens inside the body during physical activity, training and athletic competition. It readies students to help clients of any age or ability level improve their fitness and well-being. Learning is mostly practical. In the lab, students take readings such as pulse, pressure and body fat, and they examine the way diet influences athletic output. A final course asks them to plan and deliver exercise programs for university employees. Upon finishing, graduates can sit for professional certifications covering personal training, fitness instruction, and strength plus conditioning coaching. Common workplaces include gyms, athletic performance centers and company wellness departments. Others continue into advanced study, for instance exercise physiology, or the occupational and physical therapy professions. An admission counselor can help you judge whether the path matches your goals.
