Fashion pathways at Chaffey College, in the Arts, Communication and Design area, prepare students for the apparel industry through hands-on study of garment making and the business side of retail. The Fashion Design associate of science sits alongside a Fashion Merchandising option and several certificates.
Students work on fashion history, color theory, textile selection, sketching, patternmaking, draping, digital design tools and sewing up finished garments. Merchandising students add retail management and buying. Courses are delivered face-to-face, in hybrid format and online.
The department draws on working designers, production managers, manufacturers and buyers who meet with students, and Southern California's market offers entry-level roles such as assistant designer, stylist and visual merchandiser.
