Overview

The PhD in History offers a broad humanistic education that develops research, analytical and communication skills for careers as an academic historian or in other fields. Students work with faculty who specialize in United States and European history and with scholars from across the Claremont Colleges. The Claremont libraries and the nearby Huntington Library provide research collections. Candidates complete elective coursework, two substantive research papers, a research tools requirement of two foreign languages, or one language and one other tool, and then doctoral completion steps. Transferred graduate credit in history can replace part of the elective load. The doctorate may be pursued with another CGU degree. Full-time students finish in about four years and part-time students in about seven. The Oral History Program is a notable resource for California government and Claremont history.
