Overview

Duke's Biology department offers two routes to a bachelor's degree in the subject. The Bachelor of Science starts from foundations in biology, math, chemistry and physics, then lets students move into upper-level work in one of twelve concentration areas, with room for independent research. The Bachelor of Arts follows a liberal arts model. It suits students heading toward legal, policy or high school teaching careers, and it asks for a lighter grounding in math and chemistry alongside a solid biology core and advanced electives chosen by the student. Students can also pair biology with a related Trinity College department through an interdepartmental major, which is designed with faculty advisors and signed off by the undergraduate directors of both departments. A minor is available for those who want depth in biology to complement another major.
