Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in Classical Civilization at Duke centers on the ancient Mediterranean world and is housed in the Classical Studies department. Students begin with either a pair of foundational civilization courses or two entry-level courses in Greek or Latin, and the two paths cannot be mixed. Beyond that start, majors complete seven courses numbered 200 and up, drawn from at least three areas such as literature, philosophy, art and archaeology, and history. Literature may be read in translation or in the original language once students reach advanced work. The major closes with a capstone seminar in Classical Studies and a senior dossier. The department also lists a related Bachelor of Arts in Classical Languages, which expects second-year competence in both Greek and Latin, so students should compare the two before declaring.
