Program details

Overview

Biomedical Engineering at Duke is an undergraduate engineering degree that combines the classical engineering disciplines with mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. Students also take courses from Duke's social sciences and humanities, so the curriculum extends beyond technical training. The program opens with introductory courses on engineering design and computational thinking in the first year, and it includes a university writing course, life-science coursework and a substantial mathematics sequence. Students who want more depth can add elective sequences, a double or second major, or an undergraduate certificate. Other options include independent study, the BME Design Fellows program and a combined bachelor's and master's route. The department publishes a yearly handbook for course planning and graduation checklists for BME and for joint majors with computer science, electrical and computer, civil and environmental, and mechanical engineering.
