Overview

Classical Studies at Duke offers several Bachelor of Arts routes. The classical civilization option lets students study the ancient Mediterranean through literature, philosophy, art and archaeology, and history, with introductory work either in translation-based courses or in Greek or Latin. Students in that option complete seven advanced courses spread across at least three of those areas, then finish with a capstone seminar and a senior dossier. A separate classical languages option asks for command of Greek as well as Latin by the end of the second year, with eight courses in the two languages, most of them at an advanced level, plus a classical studies course and the capstone seminar. Minors are available as well, and the department cautions that one introductory Latin course earns no credit toward these programs.
