Overview

Students in this major work toward real command of Portuguese, both spoken and written, while studying the writing and traditions of Brazil and of the other nations where the language is official. Those nations are scattered across Africa, Asia and Europe, which gives the field a genuinely global scope. The plan of study leans heavily on advanced work. Most required courses sit at the upper level, and a good share are delivered in Portuguese or paired with a Portuguese-language section. Someone who arrives with only beginning or intermediate skills may apply a few lower-level language courses toward the total. The department also allows a limited number of English-language courses about Brazilian or lusophone culture, including cross-listed offerings from other departments, provided the major advisor signs off beforehand. Approved courses completed in Portuguese through a study abroad program can count as well, which lets students gain experience overseas without delaying progress.
