Program details

Overview

Students in the philosophy major take up broad questions about human life, such as what gives life meaning, whether God exists, where moral values originate, and how a person fits into society. The major also turns to practical subjects, including ethics in science and healthcare, public policy, the workplace, fairness and discrimination. The course plan asks for an introductory class, a class in either critical thinking or symbolic logic, a course in ethics, and further electives picked together with the department. Throughout, students practise examining ideas with care, reasoning precisely and laying out arguments in a clear way. The college describes these thinking skills as useful in a wide range of professions. Emmanuel College, located in Boston, publishes a page with further detail.
