History graduate students at Florida State can pursue a master's degree with a major in either History or Public History. Both build advanced skill in historical method, which means studying the past and reaching sound, evidence-based conclusions, while leaving room to develop expertise in chosen topics.
The History major may be finished with or without a thesis. The Public History major adds specialized coursework aimed at careers in preservation, museums, archives, and the management of resources and records.
Either path requires at least thirty-three semester credits of graduate study, and no fewer than twenty-four of those must carry a letter grade. Graduates generally go on to doctoral work or enter work in education, law, sales and management. The department is part of a Carnegie research institution.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Minimum 33 semester hours of graduate work, at least 24 on a letter-grade basis; thesis optional for the History major.
