Gavilan's Graphic Communications pathway sits within the Computer Graphics and Design department, where learners work together on hands-on projects that build practical design ability. The coursework points toward work in product design, engineering, architecture, illustration, game and simulation development, and environmental design.
Students spend much of their time producing designs with industry software, including SolidWorks, and they apply creative problem solving to meet human needs, choose suitable materials, and consider environmental impact. Classes also introduce visual design concepts, typography, research methods, and ethical practice in the profession.
Over the course of study, each student assembles a portfolio that brings together freehand sketches, three-dimensional models, and other graphics work. That portfolio shows employers or transfer reviewers what the student can do. Graduates can move directly into design-related jobs or continue toward a bachelor's degree at a four-year university.
