Gavilan's Fine and Studio Arts offering gives students a studio-centered education that joins technical craft with conceptual thinking and individual exploration. Coursework is grounded in drawing, painting, design, sculpture, and the history of art, and learners can extend their interests into ceramics, art education, murals, community-based projects, and photography.
Alongside making work, students learn to examine and interpret how people across many eras have expressed ideas through art and culture. The program encourages open-ended, divergent thinking so that learners become more capable of generating original ideas.
The art major combines a set of required foundation courses with electives, for a minimum of 24 units overall. Completing it prepares students either to carry on a personal creative practice or to transfer to a four-year university and pursue further study in the arts.
